It’s time to celebrate International Authors’ Day!

Cheers for the first annual International Authors’ Day Blog Hop hosted by Debdatta Dasgupta Sahay over at b00kr3vi3ws.

Participating bloggers (like me!) will discuss their reading habits or favorite books, recognize an author of merit, and provide a giveaway to blog visitors.

My Reading Habits

I read fiction every day. On my way to work, I listen to audiobooks. I’m currently listening to Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. And loving it!

Big Little Lies

During my meal breaks, I sprawl on a mat (just like in Kindergarten) and usually read mysteries. Right now I’m reading The Man in the Window by Norwegian author K.O. Dahl. Scandinavian authors are my new favorite mystery writers. Perhaps it’s those dark winters that add to the eerie atmosphere. What do I know? I’m from California.

In bed at night, I read women’s fiction or literary novels. My book group has decided to do two books this month, so I need to get started early. Our books are Their Eyes Were Watching God by Nora Zeale Hurston and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I’ve been meaning to read the Hurston book, so this is a good opportunity. The Color Purple will be a re-read for me, but I know I’ll get even more out of it the second time. I sat in awe the first time.

Author Shout-Out

I love so many authors, too many to name (although Neil Gaiman, Edith Wharton, Laura Lippman, Arundhati Roy, Kate Atkinson, Alice Hoffman all spring to mind), but I’d like to honor one author simply because she wrote the last book that I loved: The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. I was especially impressed because this novel is so different from Zevin’s Elsewhere, which I really liked and reviewed.

I raise my glass to Gabrielle Zevin for her wonderful writing!

Giveaway

I am giving away two copies of the e-book Moonlight Dancer and one $15 Amazon gift card. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this blog post about a favorite author or book, and I will put your name in a hat. International Authors’ Day blog hop ends on July 18th, so I will draw three winning names on the 19th. Good luck, everyone.

I’m so excited to be a part of the first annual International Authors’ Day. Thanks to Debdatta Dasgupta Sahay for creating this tribute! I’m looking forward to visiting other the sites of other participating bloggers.

And most of all, Happy Reading!

    1. Hi Amber,
I have not heard of this book–ah, so many books! Of course, I’m more of a fiction reader. Thanks for visiting.

  3. Happy International Authors Day! I have many favorites, however, I can say that Mia Sheridan is on of my top 5 favorite authors. Her Book, Archer’s Voice, is so beautifully written and full of heartfelt as well as heartbreaking emotions of two broken souls who need and do overcome diversity to find the love they need in each other. I absolutely LOVE this book.

    1. Hi Staci,
I have not heard of this author or book. The fact that Archer cannot speak is intriguing. I really liked The Story of Edgar Sawtelle–another novel with a silent narrator. Thanks for the suggestion!

    1. Edward,
What a great question! Thanks for admiring the landscape image…and, yes, it does relate to my writing. The old bridge is from the Korean countryside. Part of my book Moonlight Dancer (it’s a time-slip novel) takes place in 16th century Korea. I loved describing that setting, and the bridge and water scene brings back memories of my travels in the Korean countryside. Ah, I’m ready to go back there.

    1. Hi Cindy,
I have read a few Stephen King novels. My favorites (because they contain ghosts) are Bag of Bones and Joyland. What are yours?

  4. I would have to say E.L. James and Fifty Shades of Grey mostly because she got me to start reading again

        1. Actually, I haven’t read or seen the movie of 50 Shades. In general, I think books are better than movies but not always. I liked the movie Woman in Black more than I liked the book.

    1. Oh, I hope you like The Color Purple. I enjoy doing Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men with students. The Grapes of Wrath is pretty cool, too!

    2. Maranda,

I visited your website and tried to comment on your review of The Ghost Bride, but I could not figure out how to work your comment form. Sorry!

    1. It’s so cool that Ilona Andrews is actually a husband and wife team. They would certainly have lots to discuss at the dinner table!

  5. My favourite authors range from Terri McMillan to keep me laughing, Nicholas Sparks to pull at my heart strings, and many more.
As a teenager i was into Mills and Boons.
These days I like memoirs. i like visiting people and their lifes

  6. Love your list of authors and books. For me, Beloved is a must reread – absolutely beautiful, and a book that really works well with the movie, as it the book makes the movie more understood and vice versa. I also do audiobooks! It’s great to meet you. Nancy’s Blog
