Book-ish Ghosts

Throughout the April challenge, you get to guess the ghost novel, ghost movie, or ghost beginning with the letter of the day. You can find Book-ish Ghosts contest rules here in the theme reveal.

Of course, it goes without saying (have you ever noticed when people say it goes without saying, that they then say it?) that everything in my Blogging A to Z will be paranormal, meaning “beyond normal” from the Greek. But for today’s book and movie, other examples of para apply: para family, for instance, as in beyond what families normally do. And there’s a para from the Latin, too, which means to protect. So…

Clue 1: These two sisters would love to lose the para and just be normal, but when a backyard ghost threatens their existence, they turn to the magical aunts who raised them for magical protection.

Clue 2: The movie made from this novel of magical realism, features stars Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Sandra Bullock, Aidan Quinn among others.

Leave your best guesses in the comments! Let’s see how you do with this one.

Now for yesterday’s reveal. O stands for the movie The Orphanage. I highly recommend this Spanish movie (with English subtitles for the likes of me) about a former orphan who decides to renovate her abandoned orphanage with her husband and adopted son. It’s a beautiful movie with eerie moonlit scenes.

  1. My favourite: Practical Magic. Seen the film sooo, many times. Yet to read the novel. I expect it is much better than the film, but alas it was the film that has drawn me to this endearing sibling story.

    • I had to look up boot fair. Now I get it–selling stuff from the boot of your car. I thought it had something to do with foot apparel. In the US, we call that a flea market; I guess because some of the old goods might contain fleas. Yum. Glad you like the film Practical Magic.
