Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s getting on toward afternoon here in California, and Valentine’s Day is in full swing. After finishing my Valentine’s gifts, I started reading some blogs and listening to comments, including these from Paul Reiser on Sunday Morning. I also learned about the fascinating history of the day properly named Lupercalia from Alison Williams’s blog. Be advised, flayed goat hides are involved.

Turns out there are some Valentine’s haters out there.

Who knew?

Actually, I did. My brother is always on the lookout for what he deems crass commercialism and is quick to point out the dark side of Valentine’s Day. (He also devotes time to ferreting out political conspiracies.)

But I love Valentine’s Day. And it’s not because my husband is a big romantic. He’s not.

I guess I’m something of a softie. And I just, well, love love. You’ll know what I mean if you ever receive one of my handmade, silly Valentine’s cards.

Seems this is a good day to talk about what I love, so here goes:

I love my family and my friends

I love hot baths and cool walks and big dogs and thick sweatshirts and wide-brimmed hats and red wine.

I love reading and writing.

And it’s a lovely, lazy day, so I’m going to go take a hot bath, dress in a thick sweatshirt and read a book next to my big dog.

How about you? Are you a Valentine hater or lover? What do you love or hate about this day?

To show my love, I’m participating in a prize giveaway you can enter here.

That’s not all (no, I’m not offering ginsu knives). Nope. Instead, my novel (HEA, of course) is on sale for $0.99 for the duration of the giveaway.

Moonlight Dancer: A doll. A ghost. A love that transcends time.

  1. I love Valentine’s Day. We always make a special to-do on the day with champagne, poems, a treasure hunt, and in general, a little extra appreciation for each other. I suppose we make a big deal of many holidays though, as special days are a way of throwing a little more magic into ordinary life. Happy Valentine’s Day to you!

    1. Hi Allegra,
What fun you have on Valentine’s Day! I especially love the treasure hunt idea. Do you have a favorite poem you like to share? Hope this Valentine’s Day was special for you.

  2. Hi Deb, this is lovely blog. I hope you had a great Valentine’s Day. I love everything that you love. Especially reading, writing, and big dogs. 🙂 And, I like celebrating Valentine’s Day. Anything, which is a good excuse to make our loved ones feel special, and express our love, is necessary. So, yay to Valentine’s Day. 🙂 And, my blog on Valentine’s Day is here (if you were wondering): http://worncorners.com/2016/02/12/acceptance-is-a-small-room/

    1. Hi Deepika,
It’s so cool to meet a fellow Valentine aficionado. Yay, back. I will pop over to your blog. Thanks for sharing the link.

  3. Great post, Deb… I am not much for Valentine’s Day.. not really a hater, just sort of indifferent I suppose. I’ve never had a romantic partner and I am not overly romantic either. Hope your V-Day was great!

  4. I think Valentine’s Day is a nice day to celebrate. We celebrate so many things, why not love? Husband and I don’t do anything special on this day (I’m the romantic in the family) but I like the idea of showing a little extra love to one’s partner.

    1. I so agree with you, Delia! I’m the romantic in the family, here, too, so not much happens, but I love the idea of spreading a little love around whenever possible.

  5. Hi. was just looking back through blogs I bookmarked from last year with really cool, unusual, unique or informative themes and your blog was on my list. It’s one of my favorite themes, if not my favorite and I hope you don’t mind it I do something similar this year.

I thought I would stop by and say hello before the challenge begins. I’m glad you signed up again. I’m having some real technical problems with my blog loading. I noticed the problem began after I refused to switch my profile to Google plus. I hope I can get it all worked out before April 1st. I’m looking forward to your theme reveal and reading your posts again this year.

I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day, but I’m a romantic at heart. I absolutely love hot baths, cool walks, big dogs and especially red wine. Take care and I will see you in April.

    1. Hi Melissa,
Wow, you made my day! You bookmarked me. Yay! I’m really glad my theme inspired you in any way.

I visited your blog, and I see what you mean about a loading problem. I’m crossing my fingers you can have it repaired before April. Good luck. Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to visiting you in April.
