F is for FEED

F is for FEED

F is for FEED

But before we get to that, it’s day 6 of

the A to Z Challenge!

Otherwise known as the letter F Day for my theme

Young Adult Novels and Novels with Young Adult Narrators.

So, back to FEED. I just learned that FEED is an acronym. Who knew?

FEED stands for Fast Exact Euclidean Distance, and it’s basically the stuff computers feed on. See how I did that, played with the word feed there?

When it comes to computers, today’s young adults know more than most of us…er, older adults. So it’s not surprising that many YA novels, including today’s selections, have to do with internet hacking and computer savoir-faire. The first novel is called, in fact, Feed.

Feed

Feed by M.T. Anderson

Feed is a futuristic novel in which a hacker messes up the FEED of a group of teens that travels to the Moon on spring break. Yes, the moon. Spring break. In fact, the first line of the book is “We went to the moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck.” Sounds like teen talk even in the future. In this case, the FEED is implanted in one’s head so the modern teen doesn’t even need to dial up. Wait, do we still say dial up? The multi-prize winner Feed offers a satirical look at a dumbed-down population in a technologically advanced, superficial future.

Find Me (Find Me, #1)

Find Me by Romily Bernard

Wick is a teen computer hacker who has just received a diary from a dead classmate with the final words, “Find me.” Unfortunately for Wick, her sister now appears to be the killer’s next target. Facing high stakes (Wick’s sister is the most important person in the world to her), Wick must hack for information while evading a snoopy police detective and a derelict dad. Find Me will take readers on a fast-paced ride, guaranteed. You will root for this hard-working, lone wolf teen and the unexpected love interest next door as they hunt a killer using their computer skills.

  1. I haven’t read either of these and I’m not sure I’ve read any computer based YAs, at least not modern ones :). I seem to remember reading some when I was younger, but the tech wasn’t as advanced in them as reality is now 🙂

    1. These might be the only two computer-based YA’s I’ve read. This stuff is over my head, but I don’t worry about it when reading fiction. Just let it flow over me.

    1. Feed started to get a little depressing after a while though. Everything they used was synthetic, and they threw it all away. Part of the author’s satire, of course. I hope your girls start to enjoy reading. My younger one didn’t love to read until she was close to 30, but now she always has a book going.
